1.2 Ice hockey is a sport with intrinsic hazards. Participation in ice hockey implies the acceptance of some risk of injury. Use of a face protector or visor certified under this Standard will not prevent all injuries. When used as intended and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, the use of a face protector or visor certified under this Standard may reduce the frequency and severity of injuries to the face and eyes.
1.3 Four types of protectors as defined in Clause 2.1 are considered under this Standard:
Type 1. A face protector intended for use by persons older than 10 years of age, other than goaltenders;
Type 2. A face protector intended for use by persons 10 years of age or younger, other than goaltenders;
Type 3. A face protector intended for use by goaltenders.
Type 4. (Visor) A visor is intended for use by persons in the junior age category and older, other than goaltenders.
1.4 This Standard establishes certain mandatory, minimum requirements for ice hockey face protectors and visors in the following areas: (a) materials used in fabrication; (b) assembly, design, and finish; (c) mass and areas of coverage; (d) optical requirements; (e) stability: (f) impact resistance; (g) penetration resistance; (h) strength and durability; and (i) labels, tags, and markings.
